lab diamonds
A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. Lab diamonds are chemically, physically and optically identical to a mined diamonds. They consist of the same carbon atoms as mined diamonds. Naturally occurring diamonds are created by the crushing pressure and immense heat of the Earth’s mantle. Lab-grown diamonds are also created using extreme pressure and heat, but inside a machine.
At ve.co we prefer to use lab-grown diamonds in our pieces for ethical and environmental reasons. An estimated 250 tonnes of earth is shifted for every single carat of naturally occurring diamonds. The easiest way to avoid unethically mined diamonds is to choose lab-made. Diamonds grown in a lab are never ‘blood diamonds’ and they have a smaller environmental footprint.
Lab-grown diamonds should not be confused with imitation diamonds. Imitation diamonds, such as cubic zirconia and moissanite, don't have the same chemical and physical properties as real diamonds. While they have similar optical properties they are not carbon crystals.
